What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem or self-worth essentially refers to how you feel about yourself. It’s your perception of how worthy and likeable you are. If you have high self-esteem you feel positively about yourself believing that you are a deserving and good person. You like yourself. For those with low self-esteem the picture is somewhat different.

Self-esteem can come from internal or external sources as Rob discusses in this short presentation.

Self-esteem can change throughout your life in relation to how you process your experiences.

The difference between Internal Self-Esteem and External Self-Esteem.

Internal self-esteem based on a stable internal appraisal of ones thoughts, actions and beliefs such as overall realistic appraisal of worth and capabilities and perceived effort, they praises themselves, they speak kindly to themselves, and confidently. all internal factors.

External self-esteem based on an unstable external sources such as: achievement and results for example: exams work performance, sports matches, particularly in relation and compassion to how others did, and others opinions. For some people their perception of themselves is unstable, because it is almost entirely based on external events. This means that the person constantly experiences a roller coaster of emotions. There are times when you feel fantastic but there are going to be many times when you struggle with very low self-esteem.

Remember – your self-esteem is NOT a reality, its just YOUR current evaluation, your current OPINION of you. It is noted that your self-esteem is actually only two weeks old. Why two weeks? Because it actually doesn’t take very long to change a belief system, once you have the motivation to do so, in fact the moment of change actually takes about a second. You might deliberate over a decision for a number of minutes, hours or days, but the actual moment you make up your mind takes just a moment.

Your self-esteem forms one part of your psychological foundations and is, therefore one of the most important things for you to improve if you want to take control of your life!
