I Could Handle Blood and Violence But Not Vomit: An Ex-Police Officer’s Emetophobia Journey

Steph could face traumatic and terrifying events at work — until sickness was involved.

GuestSteph, with coach Lauren Singer

In today’s emotional episode, ex-police officer and Kindergarten teacher Steph joins Coach Michelle Johnson and Coach Lauren Singer to discuss Steph’s journey to becoming Emetophobia-Free.

From her career as a police officer turned Kindergarten teacher, to being a mother, to simply cooking, all of it was impacted on a catastrophic level by Emetophobia. Nights were a key area of hardship for Steph, which she described as being a ‘constant evil bully’ which she couldn’t shake. After various aggressive attempts to rid her phobia, Steph discovered the Emetophobia-Free Programme — the rest was history!

Progress isn’t linear

“I have tried everything, but the programme is all that has ever worked to overcome my Emetophobia. I am now truly and completely over my Emetophobia.”

Steph

During her various careers, Steph was able to handle traumatic and terrifying events but if sickness was involved she crumbled. Once entering the programme, she began to recognise that the programme was benefitting her entire life, not just her phobia! Steph went from not allowing herself to feel positive, to actively talking to herself in an encouraging and uplifting way, such as ‘I truly deserve to live my life’.

Lauren and Steph discuss the important fact that progress during the programme isn’t linear. Some days will feel amazing, but the next can be challenging. They remind us that we have the power to push through our self doubt and cope!

Retraining the inner voice

Michelle and Steph discuss the importance of our language, inner voice and how we speak to ourselves. During her journey, Steph acknowledged her need to be kind to herself. By focusing on this aspect, her positivity quickly followed.

In Steph’s experience, the programme involves unlearning everything you already know about emetophobia. You will completely retrain your brain, to become a positive, resilient and powerful tool! Steph overcame her phobia in around 8-12 weeks, which was closely followed by dropping her medication. With effort, commitment, and dedication, you too can overcome your Emetophobia!
