Definition of Emetophobia
Emetophobia is a specific phobia characterised by an intense fear of vomiting or seeing others vomit. This fear can be so severe that it interferes with a person’s daily life, causing them to avoid certain situations or engage in excessive behaviours to prevent vomiting. In this article, we will explore the meaning of emetophobia and the symptoms associated with this phobia.
Emetophobia is a specific phobia that falls under the category of anxiety disorders. This phobia is also known as a specific phobia of vomit (it’s official title). It is a persistent and excessive fear of either vomiting oneself or seeing someone else vomit.
Symptoms of Emetophobia
Emetophobia can cause a wide range of physical and psychological symptoms. Some common symptoms of emetophobia include:
Avoidance behaviours – individuals with emetophobia may avoid situations where they fear vomiting or seeing others vomit. This can include avoiding certain foods, public transportation, or social events where alcohol may be present.
Physical symptoms – emetophobia can cause a variety of anxiety-related physical symptoms due to feeling constantly ‘on-guard’ and anxious in case of exposure to vomit. These physical symptoms include nausea, dizziness, trembling, sweating and an increased heart rate. The nausea as a result of anxiety only increases the emetophobe’s anxiety, as they convince themselves they’re going to be sick.
Panic attacks – individuals with emetophobia may experience panic attacks when confronted with vomit-related situations or objects, or if they feel sick themselves.
Excessive cleanliness behaviours – individuals with emetophobia may engage in excessive cleaning or disinfecting behaviours to prevent the spread of germs and reduce the risk of vomiting.
How common is emetophobia?
It is estimated around 0.5% of the population suffer from a specific phobia of vomit. This is different to a fear of vomit which is more common in up to 8.8% of the population. Many people with a phobia of vomit are often too ashamed to talk about their problem or feel very misunderstood when they do.
Conclusion
Emetophobia is a challenging condition, characterised by an intense fear of vomiting or seeing others vomit. The fear is so extreme it can greatly interfere with the sufferers’ life, future plans, careers, work, school and/or relationships. The meaning of emetophobia differs from a fear of being sick; where the sufferer may still be preoccupied with a fear of vomiting, but not to the extent their life is as impacted.
