Teenager Overcomes his Emetophobia after five-year ordeal

Teenager Overcomes his EmetophobiaTeenage emetophobia often starts in childhood, and that was the case for this young man, who first developed the phobia when he was nine.

His emetophobia meant that school was often difficult. For example, if someone was sick near him he would have to go home for the rest of the day, and he experienced anxiety and panic attacks.

He found The Thrive Programme's Emetophobia-Free Young Person’s Editionand completed it with one of The Thrive Programme's licensed Coaches, and he is now proud to declare that he is emetophobia-free. He is also enjoying increased self-esteem and a really positive outlook on life.

What a fantastic effort and a remarkable turnaround. Well done!

Emetophobia often starts in childhood and can heavily impact the child's ability to function and enjoy life. It can be confusing and worrying for the parents to understand and navigate, so we developed the specially adapted teenage emetophobia book Young Person’s Edition for children/teenagers age 8-18 and their parents to work through together. We also have the book in Danish - Teenagers Danish Edition

Teenage emetophobia can often be hugely disruptive for the family. Family and solo therapy can be very beneficial in supporting you on your journey to recovery.

What is emetophobia?

Emetophobia, the fear of vomiting, is widespread; it is one of the most common phobias for which people consult The Thrive Programme's licensed coaches.

Research into emetophobia has suggested that prevalence of a fear of being sick ranges from 0.1 to 8.8% percent of the population (Hout & Bouman, 2011).

These different figures probably depend upon whether the researchers assessed participants for any sort of ‘fear’ of vomiting or solely focused upon a severe ‘phobia’. These prevalence figures suggest that somewhere between around 63,000 and 5.5 million people in the UK suffer from emetophobia.
