The Challenges of being a Mother with Emetophobia
Given that a majority percentage of emetophobes are female (at least 85% according to research), it is understandable that the issue of children often crops up when living with emetophobia. As part of an emetophobes general proclivity towards safety-seeking behaviours (more on that later), it is accepted that they tend to view children as a significant threat to their wellbeing.
Children, with their propensity to contract and pass on unpleasant bugs/illnesses and their cavalier approach towards hygiene, can often quickly become something that an emetophobe will seek to avoid. In extreme cases, there are emetophobes out there who have avoided having children altogether rather than face the risk of coming into contact with vomit.
However, for those women with emetophobia who DO have children, the prospect of the significant likelihood that the cherub will one day return from school with a sickness can be all-consuming.
Symptoms such as these...
- Excessive worry
- Anxiety and Panic Attacks
- OCD behaviours (constant checking)
- Low self-esteem
- Social Anxiety
- Eating difficulties (which can lead to disorders)
- Persistent feelings of nausea
- Lacking confidence
can develop into...
- Avoiding spending time near children
- Trouble sleeping
- Avoiding car journeys/public transport
- Self-harm
- Feeling suicidal
- Social withdrawal
- Avoidance of food/objects
- Avoidance of social gatherings
The Guilt of Mothers with Emetophobia
One of the most overriding emotions that emetophobic mothers who tend to distance themselves from their children as an avoidance behaviour, is guilt. Feeling drawn to stay away from the potential risk of coming into close contact with children, even their own, can bring about some complex responses and emotions.
There are those who, whilst feeling that they have little to no choice in the matter, will feel that they are less of a woman or less of a mother as a result. This self-beration can then tend to develop into poor self-esteem and feelings of not being worthy, which then lead to further beration. This cycle of behaviour is extremely unhelpful.
Despite knowing logically that the sheer intensity of their fear/phobia is driving them to perform such avoidance tactics, they will still regularly beat themselves up and see themselves as a failure.
However, it is often this battle between emetophobic thoughts and behaviours and the mothering instincts that can spur mothers with emetophobia into taking decisive action and getting in touch with us. They frequently report that they want to beat their phobia because (a) they want to be able to throw themselves into motherhood and all of its joys for the sake of their children and (b) they are desperatey keen not to pass the phobia onto their children.
