Emetophobes and Social Anxiety
Think of the most happy, carefree, confident, thriving person you know. Got them firmly in mind? How much do you think they care what others think of them? How embarrassed or awkward would they feel if they said something silly or made a mistake? How nervous are they speaking in front of others? How much would they worry if someone didn’t like them? In answer to all those questions…not a lot!
There’s no magic formula that these kinds of people have to make them somehow immune to social anxiety, you create (or don’t create) social anxiety through life as you process experiences and form beliefs. This is GREAT news because it means you don’t have to be stuck with emetophobia and social anxiety for the rest of your life.
Interestingly, emetophobes often have high social anxiety. A clear example is around being sick in front of others: a 2001 study found nearly two thirds of emetophobes were more worried about vomiting in a public place than in private – and the majority of those reported issues with social anxiety. This added fear of vomiting in front of others is centred around socially anxious worries such as being judged, being thought of as ‘disgusting’ or fearing people won’t like you.
The Thrive Programme will not only help you not fear being sick in front of others, but not fear being sick at all! And because the programme enables you to have great mental health overall, if you want to become one of those carefree, social-anxiety free, confident people, this is the closest to a ‘magic formula’ as you’re going to get!
