Phobia of Vomiting
A phobia of vomiting is a condition where an individual fears vomiting or others vomiting (most often both). Research suggests that 85-97% of emetophobes are women.
Symptoms indicative of a phobia of vomiting:
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Obsessive thoughts about vomiting or getting sick
- Fear of being in situations where you or others may vomit: such as clubs, pubs, restaurants, parties, school and public transport
- Anxiety eating or drinking in public or social settings
- Depression and low self-esteem
At the extreme end, a phobia of vomiting can lead to the sufferer being too afraid to leave the house for fear of getting ill. Some people are frightened to have general anaesthetic (or even chemotherapy) in case it causes them to feel nauseous or throw up. Often emetophobes avoid taking any medication with nausea as a side-effect. Comorbidities can include Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, social phobia and eating disorders.
When does a fear of vomiting become a phobia?
Research indicates around 8.8% of the population suffer from a fear of vomiting, but in only around 1 in 200 people this is a full-blown phobia. To be diagnosed with a specific phobia of vomiting (the official title) it must significantly interfere with your life e.g. impacting relationships, work or social life.

With the help of a trained specialist, individuals can learn to reduce their anxiety and overcome a phobia of vomiting. If you or someone you know is struggling with emetophobia, it’s essential to seek professional help. Don’t let your fear control your life; you’ve already taken the first step towards recovery.
