Podcast : 18 year old Gabbie beats a debilitating fear of vomit that ruled her life!

18-year-old Gabbie suffered from a debilitating fear of vomit that ruled her life. Her fear started after Gabbie and her brother caught the stomach flu around the age of 7 and gradually grew to the point that it was having a debilitating effect on her life.

Gabbie would have panic attacks, struggle to eat, struggle to go to school, would spend days in bed feeling sick convinced she was going to vomit. Gabbie's parents tried to help her with various CBT interventions all through her childhood and teenage years. Gabbie even attended a week long inpatient programme specific to Emetophobia but nothing worked, her phobia remained intact.

Gabbie's mum finally found the Emetophobia-Free programme online and after listening to a podcast episode 'saw clarity' for the first time and, with Gabbie's consent, signed her up for the course.

After just a few weeks Gabbie explains she no longer had to rely on her parents’ reassurance that she was going to be okay, and she used the DREAM technique (a thought recognition technique described in the programme) to manage her emotions and cope in the moment.

Gabbie explains that the Emetophobia-Free Programme was vastly different to all the CBT she had done because it taught her how her mind worked and gave her the tools fundamentally change her belief systems, thoughts and emotions rather than just learning to manage her uncomfortable emotions. She was finally able to not create the anxiety in the first place rather than just having to manage it on a daily basis.

The Emetophobia-Free programme is first and foremost a training programme that teaches the teenager how their mind works. Once they understand what they are doing to (very inadvertently) create and maintain Emetophobia, they can follow a step-by-step programme and know exactly what they need to do to uncreate it!

After completing the programme, Gabbie explains that she was able to not only attend her school residential trip, but also easily tolerate her classmate getting sick in the car with her. She also explains that she is now confident in her friendships and has all the skills she needs to create a content and happy life for herself, Emetophobia-Free!
